Radio Free Nashville - Low Power For The People
Have you ever wanted to be on the radio? Thought it would be fun to play DJ and choose what music to play? Wished you could interview the famous and infamous alike?
You can at Radio Free Nashville, middle Tennessee's first community radio station. And hundreds of community members do. RFN began broadcasting in April 2005. Since then, we've trained over 150 community programmers, had our student broadcasting course added to the curricula of area high schools, and expanded our signal reach by signing on o the SAP of a local cable channel.
We've served our community in many ways. RFN provides Nashville's only programming dedicated to examining health care in Tennessee; teaching fire safety; discussing immigration issues; introducing children to music; teaching owners how to outwit their dogs; and more. That's on top of playing every imaginable kind of music, from zydeco and blues to smooth jazz and chorale. Each of these shows is produced and hosted by a local community programmer.
And we are politically active. Radio Free Nashville is the only outlet in the area offering broad-based media education and training to the community at large, free-of-charge. We helped host the official FCC hearing on media ownership in December of 2006, and over RFN 40 programmers testified against further consolidation.
We are working to push Congress to pass the Local Community Radio Act to expand the number of community radio station like ours on the dial. And we will be the originating station broadcasting next year's the Homelessness Marathon.
You can find us at 98.9-FM on the dial
