WRCT
A Radio Station
WRCT is home of completely free format radio, meaning you won't find here the
uniformity that has become so ubiquitous towards the top of the dial. By leaving
all programming decisions to our individual DJs, WRCT has achieved some of the
most unique, artistically diverse, and overall enthralling radio youll find
on the airwaves.
WRCT began at Carnegie Mellon University in 1949 as an outgrowth of the studies
or interest of a group of engineering and a professor in radio broadcasting.
We first went on the air broadcasting by AM carrier current to just a few academic
halls and offices, on the air for 6-12 hours a day and existed by the volunteer
efforts of the students, staff and faculty much as they are to this day.
In 1974, WRCT moved from the AM carrier current on-campus only, to 88.3 MHz
FM to operating as a community broadcaster with 25 years of campus broadcasting
under its belt.Today WRCT can be clearly heard 12-15 miles fromm the CMU campus,
on every radio dial in Pittsburgh as well as the surrounding communities, not
to mention the millions of potential internet listeners worldwide. Not bad for
a radio station that started out probably as an engineering experiment in a
couple of university buildings 45 years ago!
In the 1970's WRCT began to develop its flavor and committment to providing
alternatives to our listeners other than our big brothers, the commercial stations
further up the dial, were providing. Having been criticized for not being enough
like a college station, offering diverse music and opinions to serve it's generally
younger audience, WRCT began to move away from mainstream tastes.
