 WMPG, Greater Portland Community Radio, is a student and community-run radio station that belongs to the University of Southern Maine, in Portland Maine. The prize-winning station began thirty years ago when a student took a spontaneous trip to Radio Shack, discovered a FM wireless microphone kit for $1.00, which he used for broadcasting music from his dorm room. Today, WMPG reaches 150,000 people in Portland and the surrounding area with a 1,111 watts signal and a translator with 50 watts. WMPG is located at 90.9 and 104.1 on the radio dial.
