MARCH 2008
-
MARCH 4th - TEXAS & OHIO PRIMARIES - On March 4, Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont go to the polls, making this the biggest primary after Super Tuesday. With the Democratic nomination still up for grabs, these states may play a key role in the race. Beginning at 9pm EST / 8pm CST / 6pm PST, KPFT in Houston, TX will produce live headlines/analysis segments at the top and bottom of each hour. The last package will end at 12:10am EST / 11:10pm CST / 9:10pm PST. KPFT programmer Pokey Anderson will host the broadcast, and KPFT Program Director Ernesto Aguilar will likely be executive producer. The live drop-ins will be available via the Ku satellite; some of the audio likely also uploaded to Audioport.org.
-
MARCH 8th - INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY - Saturday, March 8th is International Women's Day. Pacifica's five stations will each produce a one hour program for national broadcast, with affiliate station producers woven into each hour. Each of these hours will be pre-recorded and uploaded to Audioport.org. They will be suitable for airplay on March 8th or anytime during March (Women's History Month).
-
MARCH 14th-16th - WINTER SOLDIER II - Probably the most important anti-war event in the U.S. in decades, Winter Soldier will bring dozens of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to Washington, DC to testify about their experiences. Like the original Winter Solider event in 1971, this event will provide a "public investigation" of the abuses, effects, and consequences of current U.S. wars, combining veteran testimony with "ally panels." Pacifica journalists Aaron Glantz and Aimee Allison will host the live broadcasts - tentatively scheduled for Friday, March 14, 10am-7pm; Saturday, March 15, 9am-7pm; and Sunday, March 16, 10am-4pm. The live broadcast will be available via the Ku satellite, and the event audio will be available later at Audioport.org.
FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD...

APRIL - DC Poets Against the War are hosting an event called "Split This Rock Anti-War Poetry Festival" on March 20-23. While Pacifica does not have plans to broadcast this event live, we will be recording the readings and packaging them into a 2-hour broadcast for station airplay. These produced hours will be available in Audioport.org in early April, which happens to be National Poetry Month.
-
MAY 15 - 60th Anniversary of "NAKBA", the Palestinian "cataclysm" of 1948 that saw the mass deportation of Palestinians from their cities and villages and massacres of civilians. This will likely be a pre-recorded special, available at Audioport.org.
-
MAY - Strip Mining the Future - Ohio-based reporter/producer Evan Davis is currently producing a one-hour documentary on on the impact of surface mining on the environment and the populations of West Virginia and Arizona. The documentary will focus on Mountaintop Removal mining in Appalachia, strip mining in the Native American communities of Arizona, and "clean coal" technologies that encourage both. The documentary is currently on schedule to be completed sometime in May and will be available in Audioport.
