KRCC radio belongs to Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. The
station reaches an estimated half a million listeners, operating at 2,100
watts from 687 meters above average terrain. KRCC dates back to 1944, and,
similar to many other early educational radio pioneers, began as a
two-room public address system in one of Colorado College's buildings.
KRCC began over-the-air-broadcasting in April of 1951 as the first
non-commercial educational FM radio station in the state of Colorado.
In recent years, the station concentrated on extending its signal to
un-served communities throughout southern Colorado via a network of
translators. Today it broadcasts over 10 frequencies (including 3
commercial ones), reaching the Colorado communities of Colorado City,
Pueblo, Westcliffe, Gardner, Limon, Manitou Springs, Trinidad, Buena
Vista, Salida, Villa Grove, Canon City and Raton, NM.
In 2000, a repeater station for KRCC was added in the city of La Junta -
KRLJ 89.1 FM.
Today, KRCC is operated by a combination of broadcast professionals,
students, and community volunteers. Programs include news and information,
freeform radio, jazz, blues, celtic, and reggae. KRCC has its own news
department.
A Public Radio station, KRCC is also affiliated with National Public Radio
(NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), Rocky Mountain Public Radio
(RMPR), Radio Research Consortium (RRC), High Country Community Radio
Coalition (HCCRC).
