IS JUNETEENTH REVOLUTIONARY?

Thursday June 21, 2007
Produced by Askia Muhammad of WPFW in Washington, D.C.

Juneteenth is the day in 1865 when the slaves were freed in Texas. Despite the importance of this holiday, Juneteenth is not found in many African-American reference books. Host Askia Muhammad examines the history of the holiday and asks: is Juneteenth revolutionary?

Insight is provided from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and by music from Oscar Brown Jr., Louis Jordan, Charles Mingus, and Louis X.

Though the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, it had little immediate effect on most slaves' day-to-day lives, particularly in Texas. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived on Galveston Island to enforce the emancipation of its slaves.
