ROADS TO FREEDOMThursday May 31, 2007 Produced by the Schomburg Junior Scholars
Production assistance from Doug George of WBAI in New York, NY
Movement Headlines from Emily Howard in San Francisco, CA
This week on Sprouts, what and where are the roads to freedom? Are we free when others are not? The youth of Radio Schomburg hit the streets with their mikes to find out.
Whatever freedoms 23 year-old Sean Bell had, were taken away from him. The morning of his wedding last November, Sean Bell and his two friends Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman were leaving his bachelor party in Jamaica, Queens. Undercover policemen shot at them fifty times, killing Sean and injuring his friends. We hear from those who are demanding justice.
We also ask the youth and residents of Harlem: are you free? And Kristal Graham reports on the just-finished renovations to the historic Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The show begins with Movement Headlines by Emily Howard in San Francisco.
