REVITALIZING DEMOCRACYThursday May 24, 2007 Produced by Chris Huestis of WRFL in Lexington, KY
This week on Sprouts, Marvin Jones maintains he has found the silver bullet that will save and revitalize democracy. Chris Huestis interviews Jones and discusses his forthcoming book, "Citizen Assemblies Now! The Tecumseh-Jefferson Campaign."
The book focuses on the need to revitalize citizen assemblies -- an idea from Thomas Jefferson, also inspired by Tecumseh the great Shawnee American Indian Chief, from Ohio, who led a effort to unite American Indian tribes in resisting the advance of European settlers nearly 200 years ago.
Jones has spent a lifetime working for social change in a number of positions... Presbyterian minister, director of a federal War on Poverty program, bringing successful lawsuits against polluters, being in charge of a U.S. Senate subcommittee on world poverty, Campaign Chairman for a number of political candidates including an Alderman who defeated the old Mayor Daley machine, plus a campaign for the very first Congressional candidate in the nation to run as an opponent to the Viet Nam War. He worked on low-income housing in Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan, was Director of a college students' program in New York City and Washington D.C. For the last 25 years he has published a monthly magazine that deals with local, national and international issues.
