HOW TO START A COMMUNITY RADIO STATIONThursday, April 19, 2007
Produced by: Ursula Ruedenberg and Doug George of WBAI in New York, NY
Co-producer: Dori Smith of WHUS in Storrs, CT
Host: Nicholas Johnson, former FCC commissioner
Engineering assistance: Gregory Johnson
Hosted by former FCC commissioner and renowned free speech advocate Nicholas Johnson, this week's Sprouts explains how you can start a new community radio station.
The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has announced it will allow Americans to apply for full-power, non-commercial FM radio licenses between October 12 and 19 2007. This a rare opportunity and it is likely to be the last.
Many Americans are increasingly frustrated with mainstream media. They are tired of looking in vain for real news about real issues that affect ordinary people. Marginalized communities, often excluded from commercial media, are looking to have a voice.
We look at how community radio provides a solution. The program features the voices of those running community radio stations, and celebrates the ways locally-based non-commercial radio serves communities.
Music featured includes "War is a Crime" by Antibalas, "Listener Supported" by Michael Franti & Spearhead, "I Need to Know" by Stephan Smith, "Look to the Left of Your Dial" by Ann Pheaney, "Radio Free" by Bob Everingham (rocketboxrecords.com), "Valsinha" by Gerador Zero, "Find the Song" by Mary Young Blood, "Ana" by vieux Farka Toure, and "Jas Favorite" by Jean-Paul Bataille.
