Thursday, April 12, 2007
Produced by: Young Broadcasters of America and Mahdi El of WSKR in Philadelphia, PA

This week on Sprouts panelists from the Young Broadcasters of America Intramural Club answer questions about youth violence.

They also discuss the mindset surrounding young people whom engage in violence, thus providing insight from a youth perspective. There are two panel discussions that take place. The first panel (the 1st and last segments) is hosted by members of our YBA Satellite 7/ Wagner Middle School/ IDAAY Program (Institute for the Development of African America Youth). The second panel (middle panel discussion) is hosted by our YBA Satellite 5/ Olney High School/YouthNet Center/ Salvation Army.

Young Broadcasters of America builds intramural clubs of young people (ranging from ages 9-19) whom are aspiring for the noble trade of broadcasting. YBA seeks to:
  • Provide a platform for discussion about issues, concerns and interest of young people;
  • Encourage scholastic and moral excellence by rewarding those young people whom achieve high marks on report cards and whom display altruistic values;
  • Strengthen members’ basic knowledge and command of the American-English language;
  • Encourage young people to develop their journalistic talent;
  • Prevent and reduce truancy occurrences;
  • Serve as an outlet for youth creativity and expression as an alternative to violence;
  • Initiate apprenticeship programs in various journalistic, artistic, and technical aspects of broadcasting; and
  • Provide hands-on training in the club-members’ field of interest in a “state of the art” production and broadcasting studio.
