This week on Sprouts we explore the battle over Reagan's legacy through a look back on his Presidency and the current efforts to memorialize him.
Ronald Reagan was one of the most divisive figures in modern political history. From his social conservatism, his demonization of communism and his adventures in Latin America and the Middle East, Reagan left ample material for supporters and critics alike. Since his death in 2004, a wide range of groups have entered into the debate over what exactly Reagan's legacy should be. Was he the 'Great Communicator' who restored our faith in America, or was he the 'Gipper' who brought us closer to nuclear annihilation?
We'll explore the battle over Reagan's legacy through a look back on his Presidency and the current efforts to memorialize him. We'll hear from Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform and the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project, longtime anti-nuclear activist and winner of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize Doctor Helen Caldicott, as well as Michael Schaller, professor of History at the University of Arizona, and Kyle Longley, professor of History at Arizona State University, both authors of a new book titled "Deconstructing Reagan: Conservative Mythology and America's Fortieth President," on just what a presidential legacy is, some of the efforts to create Ronald Reagan's legacy, and the effect these efforts can have on our view of the past, present and the future.
