This week on Sprouts we feature the words of Riverbend, a woman living in Baghdad.

In August 2003, a young Iraqi woman began writing a blog called Baghdad Burning. Under the pseudonym Riverbend, she gave readers around the world an unfiltered view of life on the ground in occupied Iraq. Four years later, Riverbend still blogs when she is able, and her writings have been translated in numerous languages, collected and published in two volumes, and made into several dramatic plays.

Today on Sprouts we feature selections from Baghdad Burning, read by Riham Barghouti, founding member of Adalah-NY: Coalition for Justice in the Middle East. Originally recorded by David Ochiutto of WBAI-NY, the reading has been remixed with a dramatic musical soundscape. Featured are instrumental tracks by Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Dhafer Youssef and Djivan Gasparyan.

Later in the show, we travel to Washington D.C., where hundreds of thousands rallied against the Iraq occupation on January 27th of this year. We hear a collage of voices, starting with Elaine Johnson and Celeste Zappala, two inspirational women whose sons were killed in Iraq. Also featured are veterans, labor activists, youth of color and others, all united in demanding an end to the Iraq occupation. Music includes instrumental tracks by The Cinematic Orchestra, Kanye West/Harlem Gospel Choir, Paris and Mos Def.

The program begins with movement headlines by Emily Howard from New College of California in San Franciso.
