This Week on Sprouts we honor International Women's Day with an update on conditions for women in the Middle East. Journalist Dahr Jamail describes the situation faced by four women sentenced to hang to death in Iraq. Two of them have their babies with them in prison according to Amnesty International.

We also hear a selection of music by women singers and songwriters whose work has social and political relevance. We hear the music of Malvina Reynolds, from her Sings the Truth album. Reynolds wrote the song 'Little Boxes' that was made famous by Pete Seeger.

Beth Ann Toupin, coordinator of the Iraq program within the Middle East Coordination Group, explains what her organization is doing to try to prevent the Iraqi Government from carrying out the executions and she reports how listeners can help.

Also on Iran,  Amnesty International has created an action web page on behalf of some 30 feminist women who are prisoners of conscience.

We also hear a selection of music by women singers and songwriters whose work has social and political relevance. We hear the music of Malvina Reynolds, from her Sings the Truth album. Reynolds wrote the song 'Little Boxes' that was made famous by Pete Seeger.

We also hear from Patti Smith, the Wailin Jennys, Kruder and
Dorfheister, the Dixie Chicks, and Yoko Ono, Hard Times are Over and Hanna Niklewicz reads a message of hope and healing from Yoko that was published in the New York Times.

Singer Jenny Toomey joins us to discuss the impact of the Grammy Award winning Dixie Chicks and we hear the song Hope from their album, Taking the Long Way.
