COLLEGE STUDENTS AND THE INTERNET

Wednesday, January 7, 2007
Produced by Jennifer Hartman, KUGS, Bellingham, WA.  Music: "LEDs," performed by Optimus Rhyme

KUGS is a student-operated station at Western Washington University. This show features no traditional authority figures- only students.

Alex Hudson, president of WWU's chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, discusses Internet privacy, government surveillance, and online anonymity options; WWU students discuss their experiences with social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace; and the moderator of WWU's on-campus file-sharing program discusses the technical aspects of direct connect file-sharing.

Also: Phil Ashlock, Web Developer for WWU's Associated Students, talks about the changing world of online intellectual property rights; Ariel Wetzel has been blogging about gender and video gaming culture for over a year, and she looks at the intersections of the virtual and the real in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs); and finally, WWU students who play World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs.

Sprouts is a weekly newsmagazine produced collaboratively between Pacifica Radio, and independent producers at community radio stations across the country. The program is offered free of charge to all radio stations and welcomes submissions from producers in independent media. For information, contact Ursula Ruedenberg at ursula@pacifica.org.
