PROGRESSIVE US WRITERS
January 3, 2007. Produced by: Dori Smith, WHUS, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT This week we speak with progressive American writers about the importance of reversing Bush Administration policies at home and abroad. What are the costs? What should activists be focusing on during the years leading up to the next Presidential election? How can the U.S. political system be transformed for the sake of the social welfare?
Heather Wokusch, an American living in Austria talks about her book series, "The Progressives Handbook, Volumes 1 and 2, Everything you need to know about the Bush Administration's Record," (Volume 1) US Weapons of Mass Destruction,Women's Issues, Education and Mainstream Media (Volume 2) Elections and Voting, Environment, and Foreign Policy. http://www.heatherwokusch.com
And James W. Russell, sociology professor at Eastern Connecticut State University, talks about his 2006 book, Double Standard, Social Policy in Europe and the United States, Published by Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, Inc. at www.rowmanlittlefield.com

This week's stories:
Heather Wokusch has organized key news stories and data from good government groups and activist web sites into a kind of field guide for activists. She calls it "The Progressives' Handbook, Everything you need to know about the Bush Administration's record to make a difference now."
A prolific journalist and blogger Heather offers a vital resource for anyone seeking to engage in media work, teaching, or activism, and press for greater accountability. Her books illustrate the depth of corruption in the Bush White House, and provide a window onto the larger problems of vast corporate influence over the US Government.
Jim Russell is a professor at Eastern Connecticut State University and a former editor of "New Left notes", the national newspaper for Students for a Democratic Society. We discuss his latest book, "Double Standard, Social Policy in Europe and the United States." In it he goes into great detail about the state of American society in terms of poverty, prisons, failing health care systems, and instability, which he believes might be corrected by strengthening America's commitment to providing for the social welfare. American capitalism can be reformed, he argues.
"If socialism is off the present world stage as a complete model," he writes, "It still has a role to play in terms of developing ways to humanize capitalism as much as possible and perhaps preparing the way for some future development of a humane, prosperous, and democratic socialism."
