REVEREND BILLY ON PEACEThursday December 28, 2006. Produced by Ursula Ruedenberg at Pacifica National Office in New York City. Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping delivered an end-of-the-year sermon at Cooper Union's Great Hall in New York City on December 10th. In anticipation of a political as well as natural spring, he took stock and meditated on the path to peace. The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir provided stirring music. This performance was dedicated to the memory of activist Brad Will, recently killed in Oaxaca, Mexico.
The Church of Stop Shopping is a not-for-profit organization staffed almost entirely by volunteers, based in New York City, where Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir fight corporate culture. The "practice" they preach is "backing away from the product" and "Putting The Odd Back In God." They sing and preach for local economies and real experiences that are not mediated through products. Their missionary has included campaigns against sweatshop labor, Starbucks, Walmart, Disney Corp, and Victoriea's Secret.
