KCSB IN 1970: STUDENT-CONTROLLED MEDIA Thursday, November 23, 2006. Produced at KCSB, Santa Barbara, CA.
KCSB is a student-run community radio station broadcasting from the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Thirty five years ago, a string of intense student-led protest erupted here that leading to the total destruction by fire of a local branch of the Bank of America.
This week's Sprouts features a rerun of a program produced by the staff of KCBS. we look back at events occurring before and after the burning of the bank that loom large in the history of student-run community radio station, and the history of the community of Isla Vista. We review the issues surrounding those events and highlight the role KCSB and other student-controlled media who were pioneering a new wave of youth oriented mass media bringing the voices of the sixties youth generation to a mass audience. Sprouts is a weekly program produced in collaberation with community radio stations and independent producers across the country that features local radio production from many radio stations and local media groups. The program is offered free of charge to all radio stations. For information, or if you would like to feature your work on Sprouts, contact Ursula Ruedenberg at ursula@pacifica.org
