LABOR DAY IN THE OLD CAPITOL OF THE CONFEDERACY

The South Shall Rise Again, But NOT The Way They Planned!

Thursday, April 14, 2006.
Produced by: Christopher Maxwell, WRIR-LP, Richmond, Va.

This week's stories: WRIR was inspired by a listener who was very active in Pacifica who has moved to Richmond Va and brought in the Pacifica Archive of the 1934 San Francisco Waterfront Strike.

WRIR's News Talk and Public Affairs committee (overseeing 14 locally produced shows and independently produced shows each weekday from 8am to 5pm) decided to create a whole series of our specials *around* that Pacifica Archive.

We have interviews with labor leaders, Nurses Delverna Russ and Ruth Strauss fighting to avoid unsafe conditions, coverage of the mithfield Packing demonstration at the Annual Stockholders Meeting to demand
labor rights for the 6000 mostly black and latino workers.

We have an interview with the teachers union, Virginia Organizing Project, Legal Aid Justice Center on Minimum Wages and Living Wage efforts in Virginia.

Another interview is with Jay Levitt is an attorney for the 180 newsroom and other employees for the Richmond Times Dispatch, the Virginia Capitol "Newspaper Of Record" that has placed a gag order on their employees. This is possibly the ONLY media coverage that those employees will see of their situation!

Thanks to the following volunteer program producers and editors at WRIR: Aaron Samsel, Denise Naim, Jason Guard, Andrew Large, Jeff Shultes, Ana Edwards, Allan Levenberg, Anna and Zoey Golden, Catherine Komp, Jeffrey Walker, Cathy Brown, Liz Humes, John Richmond, Matt Beckwith, Bill Farrar, Alyssa Salomon, Gene Pembleton, Ira Calos, Charles Williams, David Noyes, Garry .

We had more music and commentary that we didn't have time for in Sprouts. This is a mere sampling of the dozens of WRIR volunteers who produced something for their show. Even the music programmers created programming in honor of Labor Day. To hear the larger samples we could not fit into Sprouts, you can go to WRIR.org , click on "Schedule" then on Monday at 12 Noon for "Home Spun C-Span" and you will see an entry for Sprouts.
