The Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania had historically been one of the most prosperous and influential black neighborhoods in the United States until thousands of residents were evicted for the construction of a sports arena. New urban development in the form of a slots casino and a hockey stadium is currently being proposed for this area. This episode of Sprouts will feature the debate surrounding Casinos in the Hill District.
Casino advocates are promising economic development, job opportunities, and community reinvestment. Many residents aren't convinced and have formed the Hill District Gaming Task Force to evaluate the proposals. Hill District Stakeholders Evan Frazier and Marimba Millones, co-chair the committee and hope to amplify the voices of the people who will be most affected by the casino. Dr. Goddess, a longtime Hill Resident, is spreading her message by singing "Raise Your Hand: the Hill Freedom Song." The campaign in Pittsburgh against Casino Development is part of a nationwide struggle that's taking place in Philadelphia, Buffalo and many other communities across the country. Detroit has already fought a battle against casinos and lost. Shea Howell a community activist describes the devastating affects that the three casinos have had on the city of Detroit. Sprouts is a weekly program produced in collaboration with community radio stations and independent producers across the country.
