WILL OHIO'S VOTE COUNT?
Thursday August 31, 3PM EST. Produced at the studios of the Columbus Community Radio Foundation in Columbus, Ohio Music by Victoria Parks This week's program examines the status of voting rights in Ohio. The off-mic question which preceeded each interview with the guests on this program was; "Is Ohio a state where an eligible voter can register with relative ease and then go to the polls on election day and have a reasonabe expectation of being able to cast his or her vote un-hindered and hen have hat vote recorded correctly and counted?"
Obstacles to voter enfranchisement fall into three general categories;
- voter restrictions (restricting voters access to the process at the point of registration or voting)
- voter "suppression" (preventing eligible and registered voters from participating in the process),
- and vote manipulation ( altering the data after the vote is cast to mis-represent the intentions of the voter).
In this edition of Sprouts we speak with several prominent elecion investigators and voting rights activists who describe what happened in Ohio's 2004 election, what has changed via legislation since then and what voters are likely to face in the coming 2006 mid-term elections as well as what people can do to protect their right to vote and improve the system.
