Sprouts Have you produced something for radio that you would like to showcase nationally? We'll air it.
Sprouts Radio from the Grassroots
is a 29-minute weekly program featuring radio content being produced by grassroots community radio stations, Indy Media Centers, and other independent production groups. We celebrate these many vital and diverse voices by bringing them to a national audience. Sprouts is produced collaboratively by radio producers across the country; sometimes even the world.

Our mission:

  • Showcase unique and diverse content being produced at community radio stations and other grassroots media groups
  • Encourage production collaboration across geographical distances via the Internet
  • Air news and cultural stories - that are unique to local areas - to a national audience
  • Bring new and fresh voices and stories to the airwaves
  • Encourage new producers, connecting them to other progressive producers
  • Increase communication between all producers-of-conscience

This week on Sprouts we explore the battle over Reagan's legacy through a look back on his Presidency and the current efforts to memorialize him.

Ronald Reagan was one of the most divisive figures in modern political history. From his social conservatism, his demonization of communism and his adventures in Latin America and the Middle East, Reagan left ample material for supporters and critics alike. Since his death in 2004, a wide range of groups have entered into the debate over what exactly Reagan's legacy should be. Was he the 'Great Communicator' who restored our faith in America, or was he the 'Gipper' who brought us closer to nuclear annihilation?

This week on Sprouts we feature the words of Riverbend, a woman living in Baghdad.

In August 2003, a young Iraqi woman began writing a blog called Baghdad Burning. Under the pseudonym Riverbend, she gave readers around the world an unfiltered view of life on the ground in occupied Iraq. Four years later, Riverbend still blogs when she is able, and her writings have been translated in numerous languages, collected and published in two volumes, and made into several dramatic plays.

In recognition of this week's anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, Sprouts features an interview with wounded veteran Tomas Young. On April 4, 2004, the same day Casey Sheehan was killed, Tomas Young was in Iraq, packed in with other 25 soldiers in the bed of an unarmored truck when a bullet struck him and he suddenly went numb.

Initially aired on "Tell Somebody" on KKFI 90.1 FM in Kansas City, this is the story about how Young joined the Army, how he ended up in Iraq, and his speaking out against the war.

This Week on Sprouts we honor International Women's Day with an update on conditions for women in the Middle East. Journalist Dahr Jamail describes the situation faced by four women sentenced to hang to death in Iraq. Two of them have their babies with them in prison according to Amnesty International.

We also hear a selection of music by women singers and songwriters whose work has social and political relevance. We hear the music of Malvina Reynolds, from her Sings the Truth album. Reynolds wrote the song 'Little Boxes' that was made famous by Pete Seeger.

In March of 2005, Linda Losey set off on horseback from San Diego California, headed for Baltimore, MD.

The expedition was a memorial ride for her youngest son, 10 year old Sam, who died on June 22, 2004, in a tragic family accident. It was in Sam's memory that Linda sets out on the trail to raise money for the Sam Losey Memorial Scholarship Fund, Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation, Inc. (ERRI).

This week on Sprouts we bring parts of some speeches given this weekend at the National Conference for Media Reform, organized by Free Press from January 12 - 14. This conference is the largest national gathering of activists, media makers, educators, journalists, policymakers and concerned citizens who are assessing the state of our media and mobilizing for democratic media. In its third year, it brought together approximately 3,500 participants in downtown Memphis, Tennessee .
