Act Now: You Can Bring A Radio Station to Your Town Be the media. It will soon be possible. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently preparing to open a five-day window for organizations to apply for new, FULL POWER non-commercial educational (NCE) radio frequencies. Full power station licensing has been frozen since 2000. And new applications can be filed only during this soon-to-arrive five-day window. So, this is a brief and rare opportunity for communities across the country to acquire a powerful media resource, an opportunity that is not likely to come again in the foreseeable future. |

BERKELEY, CA-- The Military Commissions Act was signed by President Bush on
Tuesday, Oct. 17. In response, Pacifica Radio
has begun to produce programs to educate the public about the threats to democracy
posed by this legislation.
In a notice filed Wednesday, Oct. 18, the US Justice Department listed 196
pending habeas cases, some of which cover groups of detainees. The new law,
it said, provides that "no court, justice, or judge" can consider
those petitions or other actions related to treatment or imprisonment filed
by anyone designated as an enemy combatant, now or in the future. |

A Message From Greg Guma, New Executive Director of the Pacifica Foundation Written by Greg Guma
A year ago, I was working as co-editor of Vermont Guardian, a statewide weekly newspaper I helped to launch in 2004, writing articles and working with journalists from across the state and around the world. If someone had predicted then that I would become Executive Director of Pacifica Radio, I would not have believed it. Nevertheless, it was a great honor (and a huge challenge) to be offered the position late last year. As you probably know, Pacifica is one of the most significant resources on the independent media landscape, producing some of the most politically significant, culturally diverse and educational radio available in this country.
