After eight years as Station Manager of WMNF, Vicki Santa stepped down for health reasons on June 16, 2008. Ms. Santa, who started her career at the station as volunteer, is credited with making WMNF one of the most successful fundraisers in community radio as well as providing state-of-the-art facilities for the station.

No one could have guessed the impact Vicki Santa would have on WMNF when she arrived at the station as a volunteer. There was an inkling of what was to come when, during her earliest days at the station, she earned the nickname "Marathon Queen" for her fundraising prowess. Randy Wynne, Program Director at WMNF, has known Ms. Santa for about 20 years and recounted how Ms. Santa earned her nickname. "During every marathon, she took time off from her job for the fund drives. She was beloved by everyone at the station because she gave in such an unselfish and generous way."

Friday, 05 September 2008
Independent journalists and local advocates delivered petitions this morning with more than 50,000 signatures to St. Paul City Hall, according to the Free Press media-reform group. The petitions call on Mayor Chris Coleman and local law enforcement officials to drop all charges against journalists arrested while covering protests outside the Republican National Convention. Those arrested included "Democracy Now!" host Amy Goodman and two producers from her show. A YouTube video of Goodman's arrest has been viewed more than 700,000 times.

Police arresting Amy Goodman
MINNEAPOLIS, MN - September 4, 2008 -- Government crackdowns on journalists are a true threat to democracy. As the Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., this week, police are systematically targeting journalists. I was arrested with my two colleagues, Democracy Now! producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, while reporting on the first day of the RNC. I have been wrongly charged with a misdemeanor. My co-workers, who were simply reporting, may be charged with felony riot.

Pacifica radio will bring you UNconventional coverage - asking politicians questions they never hear from other media, bringing you voices from the street protests outside, and, of course, bringing our own analysts onto the microphones to dissect the platforms and speeches

Pacifica’s five stations (KPFA, KPFK, KPFT, WPFW, and WBAI) will be carrying the broadcast live, as will a number of Pacifica affiliate stations. You can also listen live online at Pacifica.org.

A New Era for KAZI-Austin
Monday, 11 August 2008

This article about Pacifica affiliate KAZI Community Radio (kazifm.org) in Austin, Texas comes from the Austin-American Statesman.

KAZI 88.7 FM: The Left Side Doing it Right

KAZI studioAUSTIN, TX - August 20, 2008 -- This is a new era for KAZI, which began broadcasting on the 88.7 FM frequency in 1982. Following an expansion completed last year, the station boasts a sizable and well-outfitted on-air studio and two side production studios, all of which appear to be downright state-of-the-art.

Along with all the technical expansions, KAZI has also undergone a serious upgrade in the quality of programming over the last couple years. KAZI broadcasts 24 hours a day with a format that still includes a good selection of news and information programming including broadcasts of Pacifica Radio's "Democracy Now" at noon each weekday, live broadcasts of Austin City Council each week and several high-quality in-house talk shows including the daily "Wake-Up Call" at 6:30 a.m. and the excellent "Dad Show" offering parenting advice at 6 p.m. Tuesdays.
